It was at the BIP’s suggestion that bonnemaison decided to invite Ghent-based photographer Annemie Augustijns into its space as part of this year’s OFF programme. Around her photographic series Mirrors, Circles and Sunshine, which she has poetically arranged in concentric circles around images of the solar furnace at Odeillo in the Pyrenees, the bonnemaison gallerists have brought together a group of artists close to their hearts, mostly sculptors, the majority of whom have already exhibited at the gallery. These choices, supported by a scenographic approach they hope is both attentive and meaningful, are presented under the title Le Miroir sans maître, echoing, in dialogue with, and with a nod to this year’s BIP title, Mirroir Mirroir.
Each of the participating artists thus explores the limits of what the mirror places before our eyes. Far from being a mere carrier of the world’s reflection, the mirror becomes, metaphorically, an instrument of its (re)shaping. And because the work of art, necessarily polysemic, is rich in its ambiguity, the exhibition observes, across all the variations proposed by the invited artists, that, ultimately, the image knows no master.
Only aesthetic pleasure allows us to seize it, comme le sel sur la queue de l’oiseau.
