Featured artists: Aurélie Bay and Nathalie Hannecart
Aurélie Bay and Nathalie Hannecart have been working as a duo/collective for over six years under the label Maladita. They express themselves through photography, drawing, video, and installation, as well as through the publication of artist’s books.
Their practice is rooted in visual research and an approach to social and political rewriting.
It aims to be open, instinctive, and experimental, emerging from an artistic encounter—a poetic collaboration between two women from different generations, with different life paths and artistic practices, two contrasting states that nevertheless converge toward a feminine and intimate rebellion.
While a large part of their work centers on the female body and, more specifically, bodily freedom, it is freedom in all its forms that they explore. This has given rise to visual works blending self-portraits and female portraits from pornographic films, exploring the intimate and the universal, the boundaries between private and public, the alienation and sexualization of the female body, and emancipation and desire (Les Fleurs du Mal, 2021).
This approach, which has taken shape in other works exploring the myth of Ophelia and female artists such as the Argentine poet Alfonsina or the African-American writer Toni Morrison, challenges the constraints and censorship of our time. It aims to be humanistic and holistic, positioning the body as a social language.
With this in mind, the collective has published two books, “Maladita” and “Pedro,” which, through the mediums of photography, drawing, and collage, challenge the polished images of self-representation and connect with the world of filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar in an intimate and political dimension centered on the image of women and the question of resistance in worlds overtaken by repression.
