Featured Artist: Sophie Legros

For Sophie Legros, the experience of art and life are united in an existential exploration. By investigating the symbolism of the visual poem, she develops an open-ended body of work in which ethical and aesthetic criteria, as well as synchronicities, emerge as tools for self-orientation and self-construction. The monumental installation *Odyssées* will be presented simultaneously at Théâtre and Émulation.

For the first time, the Province of Liège Foundation for Art and Culture is partnering with the Théâtre de Liège and the Société libre d’Émulation to present the work of visual artist Sophie Legros.

Born in Huy in 1976, she has been practicing and studying painting since childhood. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège in 1999, after which she broke free from conventional frameworks, revisited mediums, and developed an experimental body of work. Her monumental installations increasingly embrace architecture and environments, to the point of integrating her own body into them. Photography and video then became new means of capturing gestures or performances—often improvised and ephemeral—in her studio or around the world.

For her, the experience of art and that of life are united in an existential exploration: an open work where ethical and aesthetic criteria, as well as synchronicities, manifest as tools for orientation, resistance, and construction. It is a quest for the self through multiple odysseys.

Occupying simultaneously the Salle des Pieds légers at the Théâtre and the Maison Renaissance de l’Émulation, the artist will have the opportunity here to engage with architectures of different yet complementary natures, investigating the symbolism of the visual poem that will take shape and seeking, within the labyrinth of the work, a happy ending or a new meaning to life.
