Featured Artist: Philippe Musch

For nearly 40 years, photographer Philippe Musch has been engaged in a photographic dialogue with trees and forests.

His work illustrates a powerful bond forged over time. The tree is thus an essential part of his life—and of our lives. Through his wanderings and encounters, he shifts between roles as a documentary photographer, landscape photographer, and portraitist of trees.

The result is a body of work born of countless encounters, and a silent conversation has begun.

Philippe Musch’s trees immerse us in a sense of free and light-hearted fulfillment. This fulfillment is reflected in the subtle hues that enhance the black-and-white baryta silver gelatin prints. The black sky makes the tree even more fascinating. It becomes an object of strong, immediate emotions that fix the gaze on this giant with feet of clay. The tree once again becomes fundamental to the landscape of our civilized life.

The concrete relationship between the wooded world and the photographer, established over time, thus began long before the digital revolution. This series was shot on film. The silver bromide prints are sepia-toned and hand-colored.
